There are many theories about the origin of visiting cards and no specific dates are given.However it is believed that the Chinese used them for many centuries.In ancient Egypt,It had been customary,when visiting a temple, to present a slip of earth en ware inscribed with the name & titles of the worshipper.It is believed that this later developed into the present form.
According to another theory, visiting cards which were probably in Europe around the sixteenth Century, originated following a custom that existed among German Students.It is said that students who were keen on playing ceremonial calls of farewell to their professors when about to leave university started leaving their names on small slips of paper when they didn't succeed in finding the professors at home.Later on women are believed to have picked up this custom , substituting cards for the paperHow visiting cards originated?
